History and development of our bakery Part 1

You are here:

The early 1990s brought entrepreneurship to many. However, this did not mean that success was guaranteed for everyone, but persistent entrepreneurs, with hard work, achieved very good results. Unfortunately, the statistics show that only 5 out of 100 start-ups survive to the third year, but fortunately this did not affect our company!

Our bakery has come a long way to its present-day plant, with a background of significant turnover and excellent products. This required an agile man who never gives up and who still runs the company day and night, Zoltán Méry, the eponym of the company, which started in 1994. The baking industry produces the range of products that are needed on a daily basis, as they are essential foodstuffs. That is why the bakery, which was founded as Méry-Pékség Kft. in Keszthely, was a good choice. The aim of the small business, which started with 10 employees, was to break into the Keszthely market with their products and later, if the opportunity arose, to expand further. At that time, they offered 15-20 types of bakery products to customers, and soon after opening, they started to develop their machinery to produce more products, based on customer demand.

The opportunity for expansion was based on quality products, a reliable and punctual delivery system, and from 30 October 1998 Zalapék Kft. in Zalaegerszeg was also part of the Méry Group, whose products were mainly sold in shops in Zalaegerszeg. At the end of January 2001 the company was fully merged into Méry-Pékség Kft. and the plant moved to Zalaegerszeg.

Of course, the development and expansion of the offer did not stop, and from June 1999 the production of confectionery products was also started in the Keszthely plant. These products were sold mainly through their own network of shops. The confectionery also produced slice cakes and occasional cakes.

The Méry Group also operated specialist baking shops, where the full range of products was available. It owned four shops in Keszthely, Zalaegerszeg and Balatonlelle. In October 1999, the company opened its first display bakery in Zalaegerszeg in the Hétforrás Discount Store of the Centrum Áruház department store, followed by the opening of a display bakery in Balatonlelle in the Tempo store in June 2000. The range was enhanced by a special cold-cooking preparation range and mini sandwiches - 30 kinds - which quickly became popular with customers.

  1. Since June, the company has also started supplying bakery products to major chains. From that year onwards, the Méry Group was responsible for the bakery and confectionery products of the SPAR supermarkets in Zalaegerszeg, Körmend and Szombathely, as well as the INTERSPAR supermarkets in Zalaegerszeg and Szombathely. In 2001, the company also started supplying the Tesco store in Nagykanizsa.
  2. In March, the company won a prestigious award: the Verona Fodros dry pasta won the title of "Excellent Hungarian Food".
  3. In July the headquarters of Méry-Pékség Kft. moved to Zalaegerszeg. The construction of the new plant was also started here. With the most modern machinery of the time, a 1500 m² plant was built to meet all requirements.
  4. In November, CAMPDEN & CHORLEYWOOD Hungary Kht. audited the HACCP Food Hygiene System in all the plants of Méry Bakery.
  5. In October, the company purchased a new, more modern facility in Keszthely, the former Austrian-owned Anker Bakery. The network provided the fresh range of products on which the company built to launch mobile shops in three counties under the name Jobb Kenyér (Better Bread). This helped to supply food to small villages in nearly 120-150 municipalities.
  6. On 20 August, Méry-Bakery won two more awards: the Peasant Bread won the "Bread of the Year" award and the Spicy Rye Bread won the Rye Bread category.

In September of this year, Méry-Bakery Ltd. signed a cooperation agreement with Helikorn Rt., so that its regional deliveries were produced at the Helikorn Rt. plant.

It's only 2004, but the Group has already achieved a lot of success and has undergone a lot of development and expansion. You will soon see further qualitative changes.
